LIVING TRADITIONS AFTER DARK · VICENZA

An autumn night at a traditional Italian village festival

Evening suppers, regional cooking and a village celebrating Saint Luke.

An autumn village festival brings a saint’s feast day into the present through evening suppers, family games and a community lunch. Regional cooking provides another reason to stay, with a pasta tradition described by Great Italian Chefs and in Valeria Necchio’s Veneto cookbook, published by Faber & Faber. 2026 Edition: from 16th until 18th October.

AN AUTUMN EVENING IN THE BERICI HILLS

At seven in the evening, the kitchens open for the Festa di San Luca in Zovencedo, a village in the Berici Hills south of Vicenza, in Veneto, northern Italy. The October celebration brings regional cooking and village life into an autumn itinerary through the hills, with Friday games and creative activities leading into supper. This is a sagra, a community festival whose reason for gathering comes from the local religious calendar. [1] For the 2026 edition, the parish called on volunteers to help organise the celebration, while the municipality welcomed the revival of a village tradition. Taking part means joining the occasion that those residents have worked to bring back. [2][4]

WHY SAINT LUKE?

Saint Luke is one of Zovencedo’s patron saints, and his feast day falls on 18 October. Although the parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, the community also honours Luke, traditionally recognised as the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. This explains both the festival’s name and its place in the autumn calendar. [2][3] The religious observance remains part of the celebration: the 2026 programme includes Sunday Mass in Saint Luke’s memory before the community lunch. Local chronicles already describe the San Luca festivities in the 1990s, alongside communal meals and dancing, placing today’s gathering within the remembered life of the village. [1][5]

TRADITIONAL FOOD AT THE VILLAGE FESTIVAL

The evening menu includes gnocchi and bigoli, the thick strands of pasta associated with Veneto cooking, served with tomato sauce or duck ragù. Saturday adds spiedo, meat roasted on a spit, alongside polenta and other regional dishes. Gnocchi and bigoli with tomato sauce offer an alternative to the meat dishes; ask the organisers about ingredients and dietary requirements. [1][6] There is an international culinary connection worth knowing before ordering. Writing for Great Italian Chefs, Valeria Necchio describes bigoli with duck ragù as a speciality of Vicenza and Padua, recalling the version she ate on trips through the Colli Berici. The recipe comes from her book Veneto: Recipes from an Italian Country Kitchen, published by Faber & Faber. Here, that regional food story belongs to the landscape around your evening meal. [6]

BEFORE DARK, A HOUSE INSIDE THE ROCK

Allow time to explore Zovencedo before supper. Its Sengia dei Meoni is a former home built into the opening of a stone quarry, with a kitchen below and bedrooms above. The last family left in 1959, after lightning struck through the chimney. The museum preserves their story, including Adelaide Meoni’s account of that evening. Check visiting arrangements separately when planning your afternoon. [7]

PLAN YOUR VISIT

The documented 2026 edition runs from 16 to 18 October, with evening food service from 19:00 on Friday and Saturday. The organisers announce covered facilities, including in bad weather. Sunday’s community lunch requires booking. [1] Check the next edition of the Festa di San Luca with the organisers, including evening opening times, menus and booking arrangements.
