Cycling north of Vicenza

Cycle from Vicenza towards the Prealps on a walkway above the river

An easy cycling route north of Vicenza, where fields and foothills meet a new steel walkway suspended above a mountain stream.

For an easy ride close to Vicenza that already feels outside the city, with water, farmland, foothills and one unexpected piece of contemporary cycling architecture. About 15 km north of Vicenza, the plain begins to rise towards the Vicentine Prealps. At Isola Vicentina, the cycling corridor towards Schio follows the Orolo before lifting onto a steel walkway built out above the stream, with fields and foothills around it. The new section opened in 2025 as part of the province’s developing green corridor between Vicenza and Schio.

About

→ From the plain towards the Prealps

North of Vicenza, the flat agricultural landscape gradually begins to fold into hills. Isola Vicentina occupies that change in terrain, between the plain and the wooded Prelessini, with small farms, chestnut woods and two streams crossing the town. It makes this section of the Vicenza Schio cycling corridor particularly good for an easy ride that already feels far beyond the city.

→ Ride above the river

The most distinctive section follows the Orolo, a mountain stream with a broad, stony bed that can carry little water for much of the year. Between San Rocco bridge and the centre of Isola Vicentina, the path moves onto a cantilevered steel walkway built above the bank, with the stream directly below and the hills ahead. The section opened in April 2025 and is 2.5 metres wide, bidirectional and illuminated.

→ Make it a half day from Vicenza

Continue towards the foothills or combine the ride with a picnic detour to Bosco della Guizza, a wooded recreation area above Isola Vicentina used locally for walks and outdoor lunches. For anyone staying in Vicenza without wanting a full mountain ride, this section gives you countryside, water and the first Prealpine landscape within an easy outing from the city.

A word from Vicenza Fare campanon to ring the bells for a feast

When Vicenza celebrated, it made campanon: the bells rung in celebration across the towers of the centre.
