The Vicenza connection behind Bridgerton House

Bridgerton House is a Palladian style mansion in London, part of a British country house tradition that traces back to Andrea Palladio and Vicenza.

The story

Old money, established and classical, with an effortless beauty.

That is how Bridgerton production designer Will Hughes Jones described the family’s world. Their home needed to express the same idea, and the London house chosen to represent it is a Palladian style mansion, as Netflix describes it.

The romance has precedent. Basildon Park, a Palladian country house, became Mr Bingley’s Netherfield in the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice before joining the world of Bridgerton.

Britain already knew the Palladian country house

Palladianism became fashionable in Britain from 1715, shaping the British culture of living. The V&A presents Palladio as one of the major influences on British architecture, while the RIBA preserves an exceptional collection of Palladian drawings.

That connection still runs directly through Vicenza. The Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio, based at Palazzo Barbaran da Porto, Contrà Porti 11, home of the Palladio Museum, is working with the RIBA on a new complete catalogue of the drawings. House & Garden has used Villa Saraceno to discuss quiet luxury, while Country Life has explored Britain’s historic relationship with the villas of the Veneto.

Bridgerton gives a contemporary name to a desire Britain has known for centuries: the Palladian country house dream began in Vicenza.

The house on screen

Its red brick façade, clipped symmetry and wisteria have made Ranger’s House, beside Greenwich Park, one of the most recognisable addresses in Bridgerton.

Greenwich Park’s historical archive describes the house rebuilt for Vice Admiral Francis Hosier in 1722 as being “in the Palladian style”. Seen from Vicenza, Ranger’s House acquires a second reading: long before Bridgerton made the English country house an object of global desire, the architectural idea behind that desire had already travelled from Vicenza to Britain.

The connection goes deeper than Regency dresses, drawing rooms and garden parties. One of the series’ defining houses belongs to an architectural tradition whose most influential source can still be visited in and around Vicenza today.
