The mountain gnocchi served with sugar and cinnamon

In Rotzo, one of the oldest villages on the Asiago Plateau, potato gnocchi can arrive at the table with butter, sugar and cinnamon. The combination sounds like dessert, but here it belongs to the old local way of eating potatoes grown in the high fields around the village. Rotzo’s potatoes are cultivated between roughly 700 and 1,000 metres, and the September potato festival still puts gnocchi, polenta considera and other potato dishes at the centre of the menu.

Know before you go
The sweet gnocchi are a traditional local preparation, but they are not guaranteed on every menu every day. Call ahead if the sugar and cinnamon version is the reason for your visit.
About
Rotzo has been growing potatoes for centuries, with the local crop cultivated on mountain land between about 700 and 1,000 metres. The high starch content makes them especially suitable for gnocchi, and the village’s oldest remembered dressing is also its most surprising: melted butter, sugar and cinnamon.
THE SEPTEMBER POTATO FESTIVAL
Every September, Rotzo celebrates its potato harvest with a village festival built around the local crop. Gnocchi appear in several versions, including butter and sage, venison ragù, gorgonzola and walnuts, and the sweet butter, sugar and cinnamon dressing. The menu also includes polenta considera and potato bread.
