WILDLIFE AFTER DARK · VICENZA

Walk through the Vicenza countryside at night in search of owls

Guided evening walks to hear owls, tawny owls and little owls across the Vicenza countryside

Once daylight disappears, the walk changes completely. Biosphaera leads small evening excursions through woods and countryside in the province of Vicenza, listening for owls, tawny owls and little owls and using playback and specialist equipment to identify the calls of nocturnal wildlife. Routes change with the programme, so each edition takes visitors into a different landscape after dark.

About

Biosphaera’s nocturnal walks are built around a simple field skill that changes the way you understand a wood after dark: recognising animals by sound before trying to see them. On an AnimalTrek edition at the Faedo plateau, above Monte di Malo, families walked through woodland and karst depressions looking for tawny owls, little owls and other nocturnal raptors. The naturalists carried a parabolic microphone to amplify distant calls and used short playback sessions to help participants recognise territorial responses from birds hidden in the trees. The location is particularly good for it. Faedo rises a little above 600 metres between the Agno Valley and Monte di Malo and is a karst plateau cut by caves, tracks and old woodland. You spend the evening learning that an owl does not need to cross the beam of a torch to give away exactly where it is.

THE EQUIPMENT NATURALISTS ACTUALLY USE

The format has developed beyond the original family owl walks. For Soundscapes at Sant’Urbano in 2025, Biosphaera used playback and specialist acoustic equipment to listen for nocturnal raptors, bats and other crepuscular animals while showing participants how naturalists collect faunal data in the field. The walk covered four kilometres and was led by an environmental hiking guide and naturalist. That makes this rather more interesting than a conventional guided walk with a wildlife checklist. Part of the evening is learning how biologists work when the animals they are studying are heard more often than seen.

OWLS, BATS AND WHATEVER ELSE IS ACTIVE THAT NIGHT

The species change with place and season. Earlier Biosphaera programmes concentrated specifically on gufi, allocchi e civette, owls, tawny owls and little owls. More recent Soundscapes editions have widened the listening to bats and other nocturnal fauna. For Via Vicenza I would therefore keep the title about owls, because it is the strongest hook, while making clear inside the card that the current format can include a broader nocturnal soundscape.

FOR FAMILIES

Yes, on the editions designed as AnimalTrek. The Faedo owl walk was explicitly created for families and curious children and followed an easy evening route. Other Biosphaera night programmes have different formats, so the age recommendation should be checked for each event.
