WILDLIFE AFTER DARK IN VICENZA

Ride by moonlight while red deer roar across the Asiago Plateau

A guided e bike ride during the September red deer rut, with a packed dinner in the woods

Every September, the woods of the Asiago Plateau fill with the deep calls of red deer during the rut. From Rifugio Valmaron, a night e bike route follows forest roads and high clearings above Enego, with moonlight, a packed dinner and the bramito somewhere among the trees.

About

THE RIDE ↓

Leave the last daylight behind at Rifugio Valmaron and follow the forest roads above Enego by e bike. The route crosses woodland and open clearings on the northern edge of the Asiago Plateau, at the hour when the mountains begin to sound very different.

Partway through the evening, dinner comes out of the rucksack. Rifugio Valmaron prepares the meal, which is eaten outside during one of the stops before the bikes head back into the woods.

LISTEN FOR THE BRAMITO ↓

September is mating season for red deer. In Italian, the male’s deep call is known as the bramito.

You may hear one stag from the forest and another answering from farther across the plateau. The animals can remain hidden among the trees, which makes the sound itself the main event.

For a few weeks each autumn, this becomes one of the most distinctive natural soundscapes in the Vicenza mountains.

DINNER FROM THE REFUGE↓

The combination is wonderfully simple: an evening ride, cold September air, something to eat outside and the chance of hearing red deer across the woods before riding back under the night sky. Rifugio Valmaron prepares the packed dinner included in the ride. The refuge itself has been run by the Meneghini family for three generations. Toni and Irma built it in 1966 using local materials, with a design inspired by a Swiss mountain chalet. Today the kitchen is known for the foods around it, mushrooms from Marcesina, game, wild herbs, berries and mountain cooking. For this outing, dinner leaves the refuge with the riders and is eaten outside during a panoramic stop.

WHEN TO GO ↓

The experience is linked to the September red deer rut, so it belongs to a very short moment in the mountain calendar.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The tour is rated intermediate and is intended for riders with some previous familiarity with an e bike and a good level of fitness. The organiser currently publishes no specific minimum age, so younger riders should be discussed directly with Enego Outdoor before booking.
