What to see inside the villa
Palladio designed the villa in 1542 for the brothers Vettore, Marco and Daniele Pisani, members of the Venetian aristocracy. Inside, the central hall has a T shaped plan and a vaulted ceiling inspired by ancient Roman baths. Outside, the house belonged to a working estate of courtyards, farm buildings and mills. The villa also hosts contemporary art in its rooms and park. Since 2007, its exhibition programme has brought artists into direct conversation with the building through works conceived for this particular setting. A visit therefore includes both the Renaissance house and its continuing life as a place for art.
The rice trade behind the villa
Rice belongs to the history of this estate. From 1539, Vettore Pisani invested in drainage, channels and roads, developing the family’s land around Bagnolo with rice as a principal crop. The Guà river provided a route for grain bound for Venice, while the estate’s courtyards and agricultural buildings accommodated its processing. As the business expanded, additional barns and rice mills were built during the sixteenth century. The villa’s monumental architecture formed part of this productive landscape. Bagnolo remains a rice growing village today. A risotto here has a local agricultural context extending well beyond the restaurant kitchen.
EAT, SLEEP, VISIT
A Palladian villa with lunch in its old farm wing
At Villa Pisani Bonetti, the restaurant occupies the barchessa, the agricultural wing of the estate, with summer tables beneath its portico overlooking the park. Osteria del Guà makes it possible to plan a visit around lunch or dinner, with Palladio’s architecture, contemporary art and Venetian cooking all within the same complex. The restaurant appears in the Touring Club Italiano’s listings. Its setting lends itself to a long lunch with friends, a dinner for two or a day devoted to the villas and food of the Vicenza countryside.
Stay for the evening
La Barchessa di Villa Pisani offers 15 rooms in the restored agricultural building and holds one MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection. Staying on the estate allows time for the villa, its art and dinner without adding another drive to the evening. Arrange accommodation, restaurant reservations and villa admission with the respective venues.
What to drink with lunch
The wine list gives considerable space to Veneto, including Soave Classico, Tai Rosso and reds from the Colli Berici, the hills south of Vicenza. Producers include Inama, Pieropan, Cavazza and Punto Zero. Ask the sommelier for a regional pairing suited to your dishes, particularly if you are combining the villa with a wider food and wine trip through Veneto.
Venetian cicchetti, dedicated to the Pisani
The most direct connection between the villa and lunch is the Antipasto alla maniera dei Pisani. Dedicated to the family who commissioned the house, this selection draws on cicchetti, the small savoury dishes associated with Venetian bars. The published menu includes fried polenta with baccalà mantecato, whipped cod, alongside cuttlefish salad and gallina in saor, a poultry interpretation of the Venetian sweet and sour preparation. These are contemporary dishes presented as a tribute to the Pisani and Venice’s trading culture. For the next course, the menu includes risotto with mushrooms, truffle and Brie fondue, and bigoli, the thick pasta of Veneto, with traditional duck sauce. Dishes change with the seasons; consult the restaurant’s current menu when booking.
