Be a farmer for a day: wild mountain herbs, botanical printing and butter making
An old mountain farmhouse where children discover milk, cheese and the colours hidden in plants.
For a family holiday in northern Italy, Vicenza’s Asiago Plateau offers something children can try for themselves: milking by hand, making cheese and printing fabric with meadow flowers. A small educational farm brings these experiences together in a mountain setting reached on foot through the countryside.

A mountain farm with a family behind it
The Cason occupies a restored malghetta, a small mountain farm building dating from the early twentieth century, surrounded by pasture, woodland and three old cherry trees. It belongs to Cristina Panozzo’s agricultural business, which continues a farming tradition across three generations. Some of the family’s animals spend the warmer months at the Cason, around two kilometres from the main farm. Cristina’s own path included artistic and social studies and time on an Australian ranch. That experience helped inspire her to develop a place for children and families back on the Asiago Plateau. Her interest in natural materials also appears in the creative side of the programme.
What can you do with children in Vicenza’s mountains?
At Il Cason delle Meraviglie, children can explore farm life through activities involving animals, milk, plants and natural materials. Published programmes include hand milking, cheese and butter making, botanical printing and short excursions to discover mountain herbs. The farm is in Treschè Conca, a village in Roana on the Asiago Plateau, in Italy’s Vicenza province. For families seeking rural experiences during a European holiday, it offers a particularly appealing combination of time outdoors and practical workshops, with different activities suited to different ages.
4 farm and nature workshops to ask about
These are published activities and documented programmes. Contact Cristina with your dates and children’s ages to arrange the experience that interests you.
1. Farmer for a day, milking and cheese making
The “Un giorno da contadino” programme introduces children to the animals and the work of the farm. Cristina’s father, known to visitors as Nonno Luigino, Grandpa Luigino, demonstrates hand milking and gives participants the chance to try it. The activity also explores making cheese and butter, connecting the milk with familiar foods. For children interested in animals and cooking, it offers a memorable introduction to mountain farming.

2. Botanical printing with meadow flowers
“Atelier del Bosco”, the woodland atelier, explores ecoprint, a form of botanical printing using plant materials. A workshop listed for 11 August 2026 invited children aged four and over to gather herbs and flowers from the surrounding meadows and use them to print bandanas and scarves. The farm’s own programme also describes printing fabric bags. For families interested in nature crafts, this is a lovely activity to request: choosing plants, exploring their pigments and making something to take home.

3. Mountain herbs and a first herbarium
The mountain herbs workshop includes a short excursion to discover local plants and create a herbarium, a collection of plant specimens. The vegetable garden programme introduces sowing, planting and the seasonal growth of vegetables. These are useful options for children who enjoy collecting, gardening and looking closely at the natural world. Mention whether your family is more interested in identifying plants or working in the garden when arranging the session.

4. A first farm visit for younger children
“La fattoria dei piccoli”, the little ones’ farm, is designed for children under four. The programme introduces the animals and helps children approach them with guidance. The published summer 2026 format lasted around 90 minutes. Ask about the next sessions when planning a visit with toddlers, and specify their ages when booking.

How do you reach the farm?
The Cason is reached on foot. The farm directs visitors to begin at the church of Treschè Conca and follow Route 1, marked in yellow, for a little over one kilometre. The final section follows a gravel lane through the meadows. Confirm the meeting point when reserving, particularly if travelling with a pushchair or someone with limited mobility. For families planning things to do around Asiago, the walk is part of the excursion, so allow time for it before the workshop begins.
