NATURAL WINE BAR IN VICENZA
1,200 Natural wines under the torment tower
More than 1,200 labels, seasonal small plates and late night drinking in the historic centre, with a medieval prison tower next door.
In the middle of Vicenza’s old town, beneath the white marble loggias of Andrea Palladio’s Basilica, a wine bar keeps more than 1,200 natural, organic and biodynamic wines. Next door rises the 12th century Torre del Tormento, once part of the city prison and the reason behind the bar’s name. Today you come here for a glass, seasonal small plates and local tapas, with one of Vicenza’s great Renaissance buildings above you and a medieval prison tower beside you. Why go: for natural wine in one of those rare places where the city’s history becomes part of the evening. Good to know: it is in the pedestrian historic centre, so come on foot. If you are driving, leave the car outside the ZTL. Where: Piazza delle Erbe, behind the Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza.

THE WINE LIST
Alle Erbe - Cantina del Tormento is an enoteca and tapas bar in Vicenza with more than 1,200 natural wine labels in its selection.
The list also moves through organic and biodynamic producers, Italian bottles and wines from further across Europe. Natural, organic and biodynamic are different terms rather than interchangeable categories, which makes the size of the selection more interesting than a simple bottle count.
The bar occupies the historic centre of Vicenza, in the cellars beneath Palladio’s Basilica.
THE TOWER
The name comes from the Torre del Tormento ( Tormento means torment) the twelfth century tower beside Piazza delle Erbe.
For centuries it served as Vicenza’s city prison. It is connected to the Basilica Palladiana through the Arco dei Bissari, so the bar occupies one of those corners where medieval civic architecture and the Renaissance city overlap almost literally. The tower’s exterior was restored in 2024 after a major conservation project.
VIVA WINE FAIR
In April 2026, the team behind the bar was among the organisers of VIVA, Salone Internazionale del Vino, which moved natural wine from the bar into two of Vicenza’s major Renaissance buildings.
More than 70 producers from across Europe took part, alongside masterclasses, talks, food and events around the city. The programme focused on producers working with natural, organic and sustainable methods.
EAT AND DRINK
The food format is built around tapas, seasonal plates and dishes designed for sharing with wine rather than a formal tasting menu.
Current listings keep the bar open late, generally until 01:00 during the week and until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday.
