ARCHITECTURE, ART AND HISTORIC HOUSES NEAR VICENZA

Eight monumental fireplaces, three late Tiepolo frescoes and a villa restored under Domus’ eye

Domus, the architecture and design magazine founded by Gio Ponti in 1928, chose this restored Venetian villa for a 2026 feature on conservation, landscape and contemporary living.

A medieval stronghold became a Venetian country house with an Italian garden, eight monumental fireplaces attributed to Alessandro Vittoria and three surviving fresco fragments from a late Giandomenico Tiepolo cycle. After a major restoration, Domus devoted a 2026 feature to the house as a case study in how historic architecture can still be lived in without flattening its past.

Know before you go

About

On May 2026, Domus devoted a feature to the restoration of this villa in the Berici Hills, praising a project based on patience, historic materials and the relationship between the house and its surrounding landscape. That landscape begins with an old fortified site. By the late 1500s it had become a Venetian villa, traditionally attributed to Vincenzo Scamozzi, arranged across three walled terraces with an Italian garden overlooking Val Liona.

AFTER THE ITALIAN GARDEN, COUNT THE FIREPLACES

There are eight monumental fireplaces on the main floor, attributed to sculptor Alessandro Vittoria. Eight. Enough to make you understand this house in winter, when the Berici Hills are cold, the rooms are enormous and a Venetian country villa had to work as a real home rather than a summer backdrop.

AND THEN, A PIECE OF TIEPOLO’S LOST VICENZA

The three large frescoes in the main hall were never painted for this villa. They are surviving fragments of a monumental 1773 cycle by Giandomenico Tiepolo, originally created for Palazzo Valmarana Franco in Vicenza and later dispersed after the war. It was one of Tiepolo’s last major works in the city. Here he painted mythology almost like architecture, in animated monochrome figures and false classical settings inspired by Palladio’s theatrical Vicenza. Other surviving fragments from the same cycle are now at the Palladio Museum.
