VICENZA · THE ZODIAC ROOM
Find your star sign among the frescoes of Vicenza's Teatro Olimpico
A seventeenth century zodiac, an architect with a point to make, and an academy that considered horsemanship part of a cultivated education.
Your star sign has an address of some distinction in Vicenza. Inside the Odeo, the frescoed reception room adjoining Palladio's Teatro Olimpico, twelve signs of the zodiac share the walls with classical gods and planetary divinities. The setting belonged to an academy whose interests extended from philosophy and theatre to riding and the handling of arms. [1][4]

Start by looking up.
Along the upper walls of the Odeo, the months of the year appear with their corresponding signs of the zodiac. Below them, classical divinities represent the planets. Painted in delicate shades of yellow ochre, the frescoes date from 1647 to 1648 and are attributed to the Vicentine painter Francesco Maffei and his workshop. [1][2]
Look for Scorpio beside October, a pairing documented in Italy's national cultural heritage catalogue. The remaining months and signs complete the celestial company. [3]
B · The architect who built the club, but never joined ↓
Vincenzo Scamozzi, the architect responsible for the celebrated perspective streets of the Teatro Olimpico, also designed the Odeo, completed in its essential architectural form between 1608 and 1609. The name Odeo comes from the ancient Greek word for song, a fitting choice for the salon Scamozzi designed for the Accademia Olimpica’s musical recitals and gatherings. [8][9]
He gave the Accademia Olimpica its handsome reception room while remaining outside the Academy's membership.
In 1615, writing in his architectural treatise L'Idea della Architettura Universale, Scamozzi took care to remind his distinguished patrons of his achievements. The Odeo, he suggested, was a building that perhaps had no equal.
One suspects the compliment was intended for the architect as much as for the room. [5]
C · An academy of scholars and horsemen ↓
Founded in Vicenza in 1555, the Accademia Olimpica brought together noblemen, artists and scholars of Greek and Latin literature. Its members cultivated philosophy, mathematics, music and theatre, while the Academy also maintained schools devoted to riding and the handling of arms.
An admirably broad interpretation of a gentleman's education.
The Odeo became a setting for the Academy's formal gatherings, a role it retains today. [4]
D · A Monday at the Olimpico ↓
From 2 November 2026, Vicenza's Teatro Olimpico also welcomes visitors on Mondays, extending access to all seven days of the week ahead of restoration works planned for late 2027. [6]
The ordinary admission ticket includes the Odeo, Antiodeo and theatre auditorium. Your visit can therefore begin with a little celestial detective work before discovering Scamozzi's celebrated stage scenery. [7]
