About
Calà del Sasso is a historic stone staircase in Vicenza, climbing from the Brenta Valley to Sasso di Asiago on the Asiago Plateau.
Its 4,444 limestone steps were built between 1388 and 1392. Alongside the staircase runs a stone channel once used to send timber from the plateau down towards the Brenta. The logs could then continue by river towards Venice, where timber supplied the Arsenal.
The route crosses woodland and steep mountain terrain between Valstagna and Sasso di Asiago. The staircase itself covers a substantial change in altitude and remains a real mountain walk, despite the simplicity of the idea: thousands of stone steps through the forest.
The route is marked as CAI trail 778. Hiking shoes, water and clothing suitable for mountain weather are recommended. Snow can make the route unsuitable during winter.
Recorded in Asiago and Roana. It is the present participle of to be born, used as a noun: the water is not found, it is being born.
