About

A heritage hike in Vicenza’s Berici Hills

The Eremo di San Cassiano, a historic hermitage in Lumignano, combines a hillside walk with a visit to an extraordinary religious site. In the Berici Hills south of Vicenza, its three storey building occupies a recess beneath an overhanging limestone cliff. You reach it on foot, following a trail along the rock faces. The seventeenth century building encloses the remains of a church dating to the sixth or seventh century, partly constructed within natural cavities. Nearby graves were carved into the limestone itself, some following the outline of a human body. For travellers seeking unusual historic places in northern Italy, the appeal is immediate: the walk brings you to architecture shaped by the cliff, with early medieval burial remains still visible.

When can you visit the hermitage?

The published opening is the first Sunday of each month, from 9.30 am to 5 pm, with free admission and guided visits provided by Club Speleologico Proteo, the Vicenza caving association. Groups and schools can enquire about openings outside the regular schedule. For a trip built around seeing the interior, contact the association before travelling.

What to look for in the rock

Look closely at the burial cavities. Archaeological investigations identified thirteen graves inside and outside the hermitage. Some are rectangular or trapezoidal; others have a shaped recess for the head, including a stone support. Excavations in 1994 also revealed remains of earlier buildings. Square holes in the cliff once held wooden beams, evidence that the surviving hermitage belonged to a more extensive settlement. These details reward a guided visit: walls, cavities and marks in the stone provide evidence of how people built, worshipped and buried their dead here over centuries.

Which trail should you use?

The managing association currently publishes a closure notice for trail 3 from Lumignano’s main square, following landslides. Its stated alternative is the trail marked 3 and 4 from Via Brojo. Use the association’s access notice when planning your walk, and observe local closure signs. Older descriptions directing visitors straight from the square should not be used for route planning while this restriction remains published.
