FROM VICENZA TO JAPAN

Dance Well was created in the province of Vicenza in 2013, inside the Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa, one of Veneto’s oldest museums. Twice a week, rooms filled with works by Jacopo Bassano and his family, Canova, Lotto, Tiepolo and Hayez become a place to dance.

A few years later, Japanese dancers began travelling to the province of Vicenza to learn the method. Kanazawa dancer and choreographer Kurumi Nakamura completed the teaching course in 2018 and became Japan’s first certified Dance Well teacher. Regular classes followed in Kanazawa in 2019.
Japan took Dance Well straight into its own art spaces. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa and Mizunoki Museum near Kyoto have all hosted it, with further sessions appearing across Tokyo.

Dance Well is an artistic practice created primarily, though not exclusively, for people living with Parkinson’s. Open to different ages, bodies and experiences of movement, it later expanded across Europe through a project supported by the EU’s Creative Europe programme.
