Japanese flower arranging in Vicenza

Study ikebana at Italy’s first official Sogetsu branch, in Vicenza

Weekly, monthly and individual lessons at the first official Italian branch of Tokyo’s Sogetsu School.

Vicenza is home to the first official Italian branch of the Sogetsu School of Tokyo. Beginners and experienced students can arrange collective or individual ikebana lessons, while the branch also organises exhibitions, demonstrations and specialist workshops. Its programme is authorised by the Sogetsu headquarters in Tokyo and follows the modern school founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927.

About

Sogetsu began in Tokyo in 1927, when Sofu Teshigahara broke with the rigid conventions of the ikebana he had learned from childhood and founded a school based on individual expression. His idea was unusually modern for the period: flowers could be arranged by anyone, in any place and with materials far beyond the traditional vase and stem. The artistic family behind Sogetsu pushed considerably further. Sofu worked across sculpture, painting and calligraphy. His son Hiroshi Teshigahara, later the school’s third Iemoto, was also the celebrated filmmaker behind Woman in the Dunes. Under Hiroshi, bamboo became material for enormous installations and stage spaces. The Sogetsu Art Center in 1960s Tokyo hosted John Cage, Yoko Ono, Robert Rauschenberg and Merce Cunningham, placing the school directly inside Japan’s postwar avant garde.

That is the Sogetsu tradition being taught in Vicenza.

→ Learn Sogetsu ikebana in Vicenza

The Vicenza Branch is the first official Sogetsu branch established in Italy. It grew from the Northern Italy Study Group, founded in 2015, and was promoted to official branch status in November 2019. The branch is authorised by the Iemoto, the head of the Sogetsu School in Tokyo, to teach Sogetsu ikebana in Italy. Lessons are offered weekly, monthly or periodically, either in groups or individually, with dates agreed in advance. That makes the branch useful both for serious students and for travellers who want to ask whether a shorter session can be arranged during a stay in Vicenza.

→ Why Sogetsu is different

Sofu Teshigahara founded Sogetsu in Tokyo in 1927 with a radical premise: ikebana should remain rooted in Japanese tradition but should also allow individual expression and respond to modern life. The school’s famous principle, “Anytime, Anywhere, by Anyone,” reflects that openness. Sogetsu arrangements are not limited to conventional flowers in a vase. The school’s modern history includes large scale installations, sculptural materials and collaborations with contemporary artists, making it particularly appealing to people interested in design, architecture and visual composition as much as floristry.

→ Classes, exhibitions and demonstrations

The branch’s activities include lessons, exhibitions, demonstrations, installations and participation in cultural events across Italy. Public introductory workshops have also been offered through events such as Verdi Passioni, with materials provided by the school and limited participant numbers. For a short visit, ask specifically about an introductory lesson, a demonstration or the next public exhibition. For longer study, request information about regular classes and progression through the Sogetsu curriculum.

→ Who this is for

This is one of the strongest Japanese cultural experiences in Vicenza for people interested in:

  • ikebana and floristry
  • Japanese aesthetics
  • contemporary composition
  • botanical design
  • slow creative practice
  • hands on cultural workshops

Beginners are welcome in the published branch information, while more experienced practitioners can ask about advanced instruction and events linked to the international Sogetsu network.

GOOD TO KNOW

You can also arrive knowing absolutely nothing. Lessons are open to beginners, can be individual or collective, and are organised weekly, monthly or periodically by arrangement. Contact the branch before travelling. Lessons are arranged in advance and public workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations follow a separate calendar.
