Private wine tastings in Vicenza's Gothic Golden House

Private tastings, Roman fragments and a family wine cellar inside Vicenza’s Ca’ d’Oro

Behind one of Vicenza’s late Gothic façades, the da Schio family still lives above a courtyard filled with Roman and medieval fragments collected in the nineteenth century. Below, the historic cellars cut into the palace foundations are used for the family’s wines and private tastings. The address is Corso Palladio 147, so this is one of the rare wine experiences you can do without leaving the historic centre.

About

Palazzo da Schio Ca’ d’Oro is visited by advance reservation. The visitable areas can include the historic cellars, archaeological collection and monumental staircase. Agricola da Schio now offers private, exclusive tastings inside the historic cellars of Palazzo da Schio Ca’ d’Oro. The tasting includes the family’s wines with local food, and can be expanded with a private guided visit to the palace exterior. Experiences are customisable on request.

LOOK FOR THE LOST GOLD
The Ca’ d’Oro name recalls the gilded details and painted decoration that once animated the Gothic façade.

THE ROMAN COURTYARD
Giovanni da Schio’s nineteenth century collection remains displayed according to his own arrangement.

THE CELLARS
They are still in use, now as the setting for private tastings of the family’s wines. The historic cellars occupy the lower levels of the palace and are still used to age and present the da Schio family wines. Private tastings take place here, while the ground floor also houses the Agricola da Schio shop.

THE STORY

Vicenza’s Ca’ d’Oro earned its nickname when its late Gothic façade still carried painted decoration and gilded architectural details. Most of that colour disappeared, but the name survived. Behind the street front, the palace becomes considerably stranger. The da Schio family still lives here, while the courtyard remains an nineteenth century antiquarium, with Roman stones and inscriptions collected by Giovanni da Schio and still arranged according to his original display. Then go underground. The historic cellars are now used for private tastings by Agricola da Schio, the family agricultural business, which produces wine from organic grapes in the Berici Hills together with honey, olive oil and cured meats. Their current tasting experience pairs the wines with local food and can also include a guided visit to the palace exterior and archaeological collection. So this Gothic house on Corso Palladio still works simultaneously as private home, archaeological collection, agricultural headquarters and city wine cellar.
