BREAKFAST & HERITAGE BAKING
Breakfast with a dessert painted in 1570
A family bakery dating to 1937, Gambero Rosso recognition and the local bussolà depicted on Villa Caldogno's Renaissance walls.
In Caldogno, breakfast comes with a family baking tradition dating to 1937 and a rather unusual piece of art history. Panetteria Zenere, featured in Gambero Rosso's 2026 bakery guide, makes bread, pastries and the local *bussolà*, a Renaissance sweet depicted in Villa Caldogno's frescoes around 1570.

About
Panetteria Zenere is a family bakery and breakfast address in Caldogno, Vicenza, with roots dating to 1937 in nearby Cresole. Today its bread reaches the family's shops in Caldogno and Rettorgole. Gambero Rosso includes Panetteria Zenere in its 2026 bakery guide, documenting the continuation of this local baking tradition. [1]
BREAKFAST & BEYOND
The Caldogno shop combines a traditional bakery with a small café and food counter, serving breakfast, pastries, sandwiches and savoury specialities. A report produced in collaboration with Pro Loco Caldogno describes a family bakery offering more than 40 varieties of bread, including loaves made with spelt, buckwheat, wholemeal and organic flours. The range changes according to the day. [2] Breakfast can be as simple as coffee and a freshly baked pastry, while the bread counter and savoury selection make it an appealing stop for a second breakfast or an early lunch.
THE RENAISSANCE SWEET
One of the bakery's most interesting connections is the traditional bussolà di Caldogno, a traditional ring shaped cake made with butter, eggs, flour and sweet wine
The sweet appears in the banquet scene painted by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo around 1570 at Villa Caldogno. Centuries later, it is recognised as a local De.Co. speciality, a municipal designation celebrating traditional products. [3] Enrica Zenere's pastry line, I Dolci di Zenere, produces its own interpretation of bussolà, using traditional ingredients including raisins and local wine. [4]
THE FLOOD AND THE LOST SOURDOUGH
The family's history includes a dramatic setback. In 2010, severe flooding destroyed the historic laboratory in Cresole, including a sourdough culture that had reportedly been maintained for 73 years. According to a local report prepared in collaboration with Pro Loco Caldogno, the family reopened a new production laboratory within a year and subsequently expanded its range through I Dolci di Zenere.
