Wildlife in Vicenza: Foxes, Winter Birds and the Autumn & Winter Nature Calendar 2026
A former airport with roe deer, a WWF oasis inside the city, new birdwatching hides and mountain workshops dedicated to wild animals.
Vicenza has wildlife stories in some unexpected places. Its former airport has become an award winning park inhabited by roe deer, hares and waterbirds, while abandoned clay pits on the other side of the city have attracted almost 200 recorded bird species. Beyond the centre are Lago di Fimon's new birdwatching hides, the protected wetlands of Dueville and the forests of the Asiago Plateau. Here is where to watch, learn about and photograph wildlife from autumn 2026 through winter 2027. [1][2][3][4]

A · An old airport where roe deer now roam ↓
Parco della Pace · Vicenza
The former Dal Molin airport has become a 63 hectare public park with wetlands, meadows, woodland, more than eight kilometres of paths and nine kilometres of waterways.
The City of Vicenza records roe deer, hares, herons, egrets, cormorants and black winged stilts among the wildlife living in or visiting its different habitats. [1]
In July 2026, the project won first prize at the European Garden Award in the category for climate adaptation in parks and gardens. The winning design involved landscape studios PAN Associati and EMF Paisatge. [2]
Take a daytime walk along the canals and wetland paths, with binoculars for waterbirds. Wildlife sightings depend on the animals and the season.
Access: Free public park, with monthly opening hours. Closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Entrance: Strada Sant'Antonino 59, Vicenza.
B · Almost 200 bird species in a former clay quarry ↓
WWF Oasi degli Stagni di Casale · Vicenza
At the eastern edge of Vicenza, an abandoned clay quarry has become a 24 hectare wetland with reed beds, ponds and observation hides.
According to WWF, almost 200 bird species have been recorded here. The list includes kingfishers, herons, little bitterns, water rails and seasonal migratory birds.
European pond turtles, newts and Lataste's frogs are among the other animals associated with these protected habitats. [3]
Autumn is an important migration period, with birds using the wetlands to rest and feed on their journeys south.
C · The new birdwatching hides at Lago di Fimon ↓
Lago di Fimon · Arcugnano
The lake in the Berici Hills has acquired two new birdwatching stations, one on its northern side and one on its southern side.
Completed in 2026 by the Province of Vicenza, the observation points were designed to allow people to watch the lake's birds without disturbing their habitats. The southern station has an accessible walkway. [4]
The same conservation project created an underpass to protect toads crossing the road during their seasonal migration.
Lago di Fimon is a good place to photograph waterbirds, explore reed beds and watch the changing winter landscape.
Access: Public lakeside paths and designated birdwatching areas, subject to local access restrictions.
When: Throughout autumn and winter. Amphibian movements depend on seasonal conditions and usually become more relevant towards spring.
Discover Lago di Fimon on Via Vicenza.
D · Winter walks and a waterside café at Dueville ↓
Risorgive del Bacchiglione · Dueville
At Dueville, springs and waterways feed a protected wetland belonging to the European Natura 2000 network.

There is also a small café within the reserve, with refreshments available during its published opening hours.
Access: Area A is free.
Guided wildlife visits: Area B, available by reservation throughout the year, including Sundays and prearranged group visits.
Address: Via Bissolati 7, Dueville.
