THE STORY
Walk into Villa Caldogno and the frescoes begin almost at eye level. Men lean over a card table. Musicians prepare to play. Couples dance beneath painted architecture. Nearby, two lovers share fruit and a tray of bussolà, the ring shaped biscuits traditionally made in Veneto.
The rooms were painted around 1570, and their subject is everyday pleasure rather than ceremony. The painters filled the walls with the social life of a country villa: music, games, conversation, flirtation and food.
Look closely and the painted architecture plays its own tricks. Figures appear through painted doorways, monumental bodies seem to support the room above, mythological characters occupy the upper walls, and small exchanges unfold between the larger scenes. A glance across the room, an invitation to dance, somebody absorbed in a game of cards: the frescoes reward the visitor who stays long enough to inspect them.
LOOK FOR
THE CARD TABLE
One of the most immediate scenes in the villa, with players gathered around the game.
THE DANCERS AND MUSICIANS
Sixteenth century leisure painted as something social, physical and surprisingly familiar.
THE LOVERS AND THEIR BUSSOLÀ
Fruit and ring shaped biscuits appear between the couple, a small food detail inside the larger fresco cycle.
THE PAINTED DOORS
Figures seem to arrive from rooms that exist only in paint.
OUTSIDE THE FRESCOES
The estate has more to explore beyond the decorated rooms. The garden extends around the villa, while the historic complex also includes the later barchesse and other surviving elements of the estate. The municipal library is housed in the Villa Caldogno complex.
MAKE TIME FOR
Give the frescoes more than a quick circuit. The pleasure here is in spotting the minor characters and domestic details between the grand compositions: the cards, food, instruments, gestures and conversations that make a sixteenth century villa feel inhabited.
