About
Stay in a former village school in Vicenza
La Scuola Guesthouse occupies the former municipal school of Campana, a village in Lusiana Conco on the southern side of the Asiago Plateau, in Italy’s Vicenza province. Built in the 1920s, the building served as a school until the 1960s. Today, its five guest rooms take their names from school subjects and the teacher who once slept in the attic. The owners retained the building’s school identity during its restoration, working with local businesses and craftspeople. Their account describes preserving the roof, floors, shutters and windows. The result is a small place to stay with a history you encounter in the bedrooms, breakfast room and courtyard.
Which room should you book?
The Teacher’s Room occupies the attic and has a freestanding bath in the bedroom. Its name recalls local accounts of a teacher who slept upstairs, although the owners acknowledge that the length of her stay is uncertain.
Geography is the other attic room, with exposed chestnut beams and terracotta ceiling tiles. History and Literature has two large windows overlooking the plain, while Arithmetic recalls a subject taught when the school was busy enough to run morning and afternoon shifts.
Science is on the ground floor, with an independent entrance and a large window facing the courtyard. It is also the room designated for guests travelling with dogs. Choose your room when booking, particularly if you want the attic bath or ground floor access.
A breakfast inspired by the pupils’ afternoon snack
The house’s merendina, a small sweet made to its own recipe, takes inspiration from polenta and milk, the snack eaten by schoolchildren in the past. It gives breakfast a connection to the building’s former life. The published selection includes bread baked in a wood fired oven, butter, yogurt, organic jams, croissants, local cheeses, cured meats and seasonal fruit. In warmer weather, breakfast is served in the courtyard beneath the large lime trees; indoors, guests eat in the Alphabet Room. Breakfast is included in the stay and begins at 8.30 am. The guesthouse offers a leisurely service rather than an early fixed finish, making this an appealing address for travellers who want breakfast to be part of the holiday.
A base for the Asiago Plateau and Vicenza’s hill towns
Use the guesthouse for a stay combining countryside walks with visits to Marostica and Bassano del Grappa. The hosts publish approximate driving times of 20 minutes to Marostica and 30 minutes to Bassano, and provide guests with a digital guide to restaurants, shops and places to visit.
For an outdoor day, ask about electric bicycle rental or professional guides for walking and cycling. Picnic baskets can be ordered the day before. The wider plateau also offers visits to malghe, mountain farms where visitors can eat and buy local produce.
Transfers from Vicenza, Asiago, Bassano del Grappa and Marostica are listed among the services available on request. Agree the arrangements directly with the guesthouse when planning your stay.
