Learn paper craft at Carteria Tassotti, Homo Faber’s Bassano del Grappa address

Eighteenth century originals, decorative papers made in Bassano and four workshop ideas, from colouring prints to books assembled without glue

Selected by the Homo Faber Guide, this family printing business in Vicenza province has revived a local tradition whose books, prints and decorative papers once travelled across Europe and beyond. Its riverside shop in Bassano del Grappa brings contemporary stationery together with original eighteenth century material. For collectors, bookbinders and paper lovers visiting northern Italy, the attraction extends from the historic designs to opportunities to explore the craft yourself.

About

Homo Faber includes Grafiche Tassotti among its selected international craft addresses. Its notebooks and papers have appeared at the MoMA Design Store in New York through Fattobene, and and later Triennale Milano. All of this leads back to a shop in the historic centre of Bassano del Grappa, a few minutes from Palladio’s Ponte Vecchio. Founded in 1957, Grafiche Tassotti is the heir to the historic Remondini printing house. Inside the attraction is the material itself, One of the most distinctive is Remondini Triangoli, taken from a 1760 woodcut and still startlingly modern as a stationery pattern. Then take the stairs. The upper floor holds the private Remondini Tassotti collection, with original eighteenth century papers, books and prints. Between 1657 and 1861 their Bassano operation became the largest printing house in eighteenth century Europe, with more than 1,000 workers, 18 movable type presses and 24 copperplate presses, sending books, popular prints, wallpapers and bookbinding papers through Europe, Russia and the Americas.

A Homo Faber paper address in Vicenza

In 1957, printer and publisher Giorgio Tassotti established his business in Bassano, reintroducing the hand coloured prints associated with the Remondini tradition. Working with the town’s civic museum, he also revived historic decorative paper designs. His interest extended to collecting and researching the originals. The Remondini Tassotti collection, displayed at the carteria, includes eighteenth century prints, patterned papers and books. Giorgio also contributed to the establishment of the municipal Remondini Printing Museum at Palazzo Sturm in 2007. The shop opened in 1992. Today, its contemporary products and historic collection give visitors two ways to approach the same subject: examine the original printed material, then browse papers and objects made by the family business that helped revive interest in it.

What can you buy at the carteria?

The Italian word carteria describes a shop specialising in paper. Here, decorative sheets share the shelves with notebooks, correspondence stationery, greeting cards, boxes and art prints. For bookbinders, the papers offer possibilities for covers and endpapers, the sheets lining the inside of a book’s cover. For stationery collectors, there are finished objects to compare with the loose sheets and historic patterns upstairs. Ask which designs derive from the Remondini archive and which began as contemporary watercolours. It is a useful way to explore the range, particularly if you want a purchase connected to Bassano’s printing history.

The workshops: 4 ways to explore the craft

The following selection includes published experiences and previous workshops organised by Tassotti and its collaborators.  Contact the carteria to find out which can be arranged for your dates, and confirm the venue, price and teaching language.
