INSIDE ITALY'S OLDEST FOUNTAIN PEN MANUFACTORY

Some of the most elaborate writing instruments in the world are made in a historic building beside the River Brenta, in Bassano del Grappa, Vicenza.

Montegrappa has worked here since 1912. In a dedicated report for Forbes, writing specialist Nancy Olson described her visits to the manufactory, where modern design technology coexists with hand finished components, rare celluloid, engraving and miniature painting. [1]

Today, the Montegrappa Experience opens the workshops to visitors on a ninety minute guided tour. Groups are limited to ten participants, allowing an unusually close view of the artisans, tools and production techniques. [2]

The visit moves from the historic collection to the Artists' Atelier and the manufacturing rooms. Veneto Secrets describes watching tiny paintings executed under a microscope, precious metals engraved by hand and individual pen components shaped through specialised machinery. Some elaborate writing instruments contain between fifty and two hundred and fifty components. [3]

It is an unusual factory tour in Italy, where engineering, goldsmithing, mechanical design and fine art share the same address.

LEARN CALLIGRAPHY IN BASSANO

The pleasure of Montegrappa continues from the manufacture of the pen to the act of writing with one.

Viart, the Vicenza craft experience programme, offers a private calligraphy workshop beginning with a visit to the Montegrappa boutique. Afterwards, participants work with a professional calligrapher in the boutique courtyard, practising handwritten lettering on notebooks produced by the historic Carteria Tassotti of Bassano del Grappa. [4]

The experience introduces lettering as both an art and a personal skill, whether composing a letter, a dedication or a handwritten keepsake.

The calligraphy workshop is arranged separately from the official factory tour, for private groups of ten to twenty participants. Pricing and dates are confirmed according to the group.

Together, the two experiences make Bassano particularly appealing for anyone interested in Italian stationery, handwriting, traditional printing and creative workshops.

A MUSEUM OF RARE WRITING INSTRUMENTS

The historic Montegrappa collection is an attraction in its own right.

Forbes describes the private museum as containing early safety fountain pens from 1912, richly coloured celluloid models from the 1930s and oversized writing instruments from the 1950s, alongside later limited editions. [1]

In the boutique, vintage pieces coexist with some of the most elaborate modern collector pens.

The collection documents how a practical invention became an object of Italian design and international collecting culture, through changing materials, nib technology, decoration and mechanical invention.

More than a century of Italian manufacturing can be followed through an object small enough to fit inside a pocket.

TOLKIEN, JAMES BOND AND STALLONE

Montegrappa's collector editions have acquired a particularly colourful international following.

Sylvester Stallone collaborated with the Bassano manufactory on Chaos, a fountain pen whose sculptural design incorporates skulls, serpents and elaborate metalwork. The relationship began with Stallone's enthusiasm for the company's Dragon pen, which became one of Montegrappa's defining collector pieces. [3]

The fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien inspired another remarkable creation. Montegrappa's Eye of Sauron pays tribute to The Lord of the Rings, with dark carved surfaces, a luminous pocket clip and a miniature One Ring that can be detached from the cap and worn separately. [5]

James Bond received an equally inventive interpretation. The limited edition 007 SpyMaster Duo conceals a pair of cufflinks within a secret compartment in the pen barrel, while its metal surface recalls the rifled interior of the famous Bond gun barrel sequence. [6]

These designs illustrate a fascinating side of Italian luxury manufacturing: the ability to reproduce an entire cinematic or literary universe through miniature sculpture, mechanical devices, precious materials and intricate detailing.

ITALIAN CELLULOID AND THE ART OF MINIATURE PAINTING

At the most elaborate end of the collection, writing instruments approach the scale and complexity of jewellery.

The manufactory works with Italian celluloid, ebonite, sterling silver, gold nibs and specialised metal finishing. Celluloid, prized for its rich colour and depth, is among the historic materials most closely associated with Montegrappa's collector editions. [7]

The Artists' Atelier brings another dimension to this material culture.

Miniature paintings can extend around the curved surface of a pen barrel, reproducing portraits, historical artworks and personal subjects in astonishing detail. Hand engraving uses the burin, a traditional tool that removes fine lines of metal to create decorative images.

Forbes has documented Montegrappa's bespoke services, while the manufactory's own Atelier programme includes personalised painting, heraldry, engraving and unique commissions. [8]

The result is an unusually intimate form of craftsmanship. The work of a painter, engraver, designer and specialist engineer meets in an object made to be held and used.

DESIGN YOUR OWN MONTEGRAPPA

Montegrappa also offers a contemporary interpretation of Italian bespoke design.

Its configurator allows clients to select models, materials, colours, nib specifications and decorative details, while the Atelier accepts more elaborate private commissions. [8]

The company's international recognition extends beyond traditional fountain pens.

The Anytime writing instrument, designed by Favaretto & Partners, combines a pen with an integrated perpetual calendar. Launched in 2023, it received an iF Design Award in 2024, as documented by the international design organisation. [9]

That contemporary design work belongs to the same Bassano manufacturing culture as the historic pens in the museum: an ongoing relationship between mechanical invention, materials and personal objects.

WHY VISIT MONTEGRAPPA IN VICENZA?

For travellers seeking rare craft experiences in Italy, unusual factory tours in Europe or historic fountain pen manufacturers to visit, Montegrappa offers a direct encounter with a working Italian manufactory.

The visit combines more than a century of writing history, rare materials, contemporary design, collector editions, miniature art and live production.

Its reputation has also received international editorial attention. Forbes has documented both the visitor experience and the company's craft culture, while The Times explored the modern revival of luxury fountain pens in March 2026, placing Montegrappa among the important names in a collecting market increasingly attracting younger enthusiasts. [1, 10]

The experience takes place in Bassano del Grappa, one of the historic centres of Italian printing, paper and craftsmanship, making Montegrappa a particularly strong addition to a design and creative travel itinerary in the province of Vicenza.
